Tragedy Is an Understatement

We lost four officers over the weekend; three deaths were vehicle-related & one was due to gunfire

We’ve lost four officers during this past weekend. The word tragedy is an understatement, and words can never fully convey the terrible impact these deaths will have on the families and friends of these officers.

Three deaths were vehicle-related, and one was due to gunfire at a domestic disturbance. We always want to know what happened; what could have been done differently; what went wrong? And, of course, could this happen to me?

The answers will come, but they won’t change what happened. These officers are gone forever and the contributions they might have made to their communities and their families will never be known. The fact these officers worked for agencies that ranged from very small to very large underscores the reality that police work can be deadly no matter where you work.

We must remain committed to driving down the number of line of duty deaths in this country. Please, for the sake of your family, your department and yourself, remember the basics of Below 100:

  • Wear your belt.
  • Wear your vest.
  • Watch your speed.
  • WIN – What’s Important Now?
  • Remember: Complacency Kills!

The life you save may very well be your own.
