The Nixle system is used to disseminate information ranging from routine day-to-day activities such as safety tips, weather alerts and traffic reports, to information on emergency situations. Messages are received with a priority level so travelers can immediately decide a course of action. Registering at www.nixle.com enables travelers to choose from additional options including the ability to receive information by email, as well as text/SMS and online, and customize the types of alerts they receive. Regardless of the delivery means chosen, there is no cost for any message they receive, though standard text messaging rates associated with mobile phone service do apply.
iPhone users can also download the Nixle application from the iTunes App Store. The application leverages the capabilities of the iPhone platform to provide additional features including real-time location updating.
"Nixle is the leader in civilian messaging applications," stated Eric Liu, Nixle CEO. "We were the first company to offer a professional-grade, mass communications system that allows government agencies and law enforcement departments nationwide to communicate directly to a geographically specific region or area. Currently, more than 4,600 government agencies have adopted Nixle for their means of real-time communications with constituents. It's the perfect means for travelers to receive notifications to keep them safe and informed."
Nixle employs a thorough screening process, unlike social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook, to verify that every agency joining its service is authentic. Other security measures, such as two-step login verification, help to safeguard agency accounts beyond the level of protection provided by other online services. All of this is done to ensure that the messages received from Nixle are genuine and reliable.
Nixle was recently named the Best Mass Notification System by Government Security News (GSN) in its 2011 Homeland Security Awards. The annual program celebrates the ongoing public-private partnership between all branches of government in the United States and private-sector vendors of IT and physical security products.
