POLK COUNTY, TN. (WRCB) -- Police say 49-year-old William Baker, a convicted sex offender, was spotted at South Polk Elementary school September 20th during the school's annual 'Grandparents Day.'
Police say Baker arrived with his neighbor and a man dressed as a woman.
"They had car trouble and offered her a ride to the school. That's how they got in,"says Detective Brian Fields.
Detective Fields says Baker blended into the crowd of more than 400 people, but what his cross-dressing friend did next became the center of attention.
"He was described as a male dressed as a female. He went into the girls bathroom and that alerted staff that something was wrong," says Fields.
School staff checked the sign-in sheet and Baker signed in as a babysitter.
While he sat having breakfast with kids present, staffers checked the sex offender registry and found Baker's profile.
He is pictured with a blonde wig from his first offense in 1994.
Police say at that time, he tried to have sex with a six-year-old.
"It concerns me anytime our kids are threatened. Safety is out number one issue," says South Polk Elementary Principal Tammy Dunn
Dunn says she was out of town at the time but was alerted the minute Baker was spotted.
She says the staff did the right thing by not creating a scene.
"My staff did a great job. They called the proper authorities and no one freaked out," says Dunn.
Detective Fields says it's not everyday you get a case like this.
This is Baker's second time violating the registry.
He was arrested in 2007 in Bradley County for a similar violation.
He is due back in court October 27th.
