Elderly Man Kills Wife and Self Inside Pennsylvania Hospital

Osmond reportedly couldn’t stand to see his 83-year old wife suffer

Authorities say an elderly man who shot and killed his 83-year-old wife in an eastern Pennsylvania hospice unit before committing suicide had decided he couldn't live without her.

District Attorney Jim Martin says the shootings happened shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown. He identified the victims as Mildred Osman and her 86-year-old husband, Elwood Osman.

Hospital senior vice president James Geiger says the family has indicated that Elwood Osmond couldn't stand to see his wife suffer and didn't want to live without her.

The hospital wasn't evacuated. No other patients or staff members were harmed or threatened.

Police say Mildred Osman entered hospice more than a week ago.

Like most hospitals, Lehigh Valley Hospital doesn't use metal detectors to screen visitors.
