BANGOR, Maine -- A local man, who was arrested twice in four days, got so mad when police took him into custody for the second time last week that he used his head to damage the police cruiser, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

"Damage was done to the car by smashing his face into it," the sergeant said referring to Paul A. Allen, 36.

Police were dispatched to Allen's apartment on Forest Avenue at about 7 p.m. Nov. 20 after he reportedly assaulted a 24-year-old woman, described as his girlfriend.

"She was pushed, slapped and choked -- all during the day," Edwards said. "It had been going on throughout the day."

The victim declined medical attention, he said.

When Officers Wade Betters, Joe Baillargeon and two others attempted to arrest Allen, who was charged four days earlier for allegedly having diverted prescription pills, hypodermic needles and a spring-loaded knife, he put up a fight, Edwards said.

"He didn't go very easily," the sergeant said. "He forcibly headbutted the trunk of the car. He continued to yell and swear. He headbutted the back passenger window and kicked the window."

Allen was charged with felony aggravated criminal mischief for damaging the cruiser and domestic violence assault. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail.
