A Chicago Police officer shot in her leg late Wednesday during a fight with a suspect appears to be a victim of friendly fire by her partner, a police source said.

The two officers were responding to a disturbance call at the intersection of East 79th and South Shore Drive at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

That's where they saw a man with a knife stabbing another man, police said.

The officers ordered the man drop the knife. When he didn't, one officer fired a Taser at him, police said.

But the man pulled out a hammer and aggressively charged the officers. Both officers fired shots, killing the man, police said.

He was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Michael Wilson, 20, of the 10000 block of South Oglesby.

The female officer suffered a graze wound to her leg. A police source said the officer appears to have been grazed by a bullet fired by the other officer, but it remains unclear whether the bullet had ricocheted before striking the officer.

Officers flooded the scene after the shooting and closed down 79th Street from South Shore to Exchange. Supt. Garry McCarthy also showed up a the scene.

The wounded officer was treated and released from an area hospital.

Meanwhile, the stabbing victim was in serious condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
