Products that save lives

From the October 2011 Issue Friday, October 14, 2011

In the tactical environment, your life and the lives of other officers depends on reliable, high-quality gear. If your department has medical supplies that consist of a first-aid kit with items you don't recognize and aren't trained to use, then you’re not prepared. The following field kits and defibrillators will help pull you through serious, life-threatening situations and help you to rescue others.
You Tell Us Are there Specialty Vehicles or Tactical Gear you think other officers must know about? Email Shana Baldassari at s.baldassari@elsevier.com and, space providing, we’ll include it in our December spotlights.

TraumaGauze

Celox trauma gauze is designed to stop lethal bleeding fast and to help cool and protect first- and second-degree burns. The dual purpose of this gauze can potentially replace multiple products with one, freeing up valuable space in a field first-aid kit. Celox is easy to use, extremely effective (clots blood in 30 seconds) and safe (it's a CE-Marked Class III Medical Device). It works independently of the body's normal clotting processes and has been proven to work in hypothermic conditions and in the presence of common anticoagulants, such as Coumadin and Heparin. It’s available in four different delivery systems, and doesn’t generate heat that could potentially burn the victim or care giver. The gauze dressing is composed of nonwoven chitosan fibers to create a soft, compliant and pliable feel similar to standard cotton gauze.

Field-Aid Pouch

The Mojo LE Tri-Mount Field-Aid Kit (3M-FAK) carries the same immediate life-saving trauma items as the rest of the Mojo LE line, but it’s packaged in a pouch designed for the tactical officer. This kit can be mounted in a location that’s most suitable for the operator. The 3M-FAK's removable belt hanger and thigh strap allow the kit to be worn three ways: It can be configured as a drop-leg thigh rig, belt-worn kit or MOLLE mounted to a ballistic vest, load-bearing vest or plate carrier.

On-Demand Defibrillator

Philips’ HeartStart FRx Defibrillator offers on-demand CPR coaching to help the stressed user recall their training. Calm, clear voice instructions are timed to the responder’s actions, guiding them through each step. One pad set works for adults, children and infants. The infant/child key turns the HeartStart FRx into a pediatric defibrillator, tailoring the voice instructions and therapy to the needs of a child. Philips SMART Biphasic therapy technology uses high current to maximize effectiveness and a lower energy dose to minimize side effects. The HeartStart FRx’s Quick Shock feature delivers therapy in eight seconds after chest compressions. It weighs 3.5 lbs.
