Karen Bune

Karen Bune

Karen Bune is employed as a victim specialist in the domestic violence unit of the State’s Attorney’s Office for Prince George’s County, Md. She serves as an adjunct professor in the department of criminal justice at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and Marymount University in Arlington, Va., where she teaches victimology. Bune is a consultant for the Training and Technical Assistance Center for the Office for Victims of Crime and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U. S. Department of Justice. She is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer on victim issues. Bune is Board Certified in Traumatic Stress and Domestic Violence, and she is a Fellow of The Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and the National Center for Crisis Management. She is a 2009 inductee in the Wakefield High School (Arlington, Va.) Hall of Fame. She received the Chief’s Award 2009 from the Prince George’s County Police Chief. She received a 2011 Recognition of Service Award from Prince George’s County County Executive Rushern Baker. Bune appears in the 2011 editions of Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World, and Marquis' Who’s Who of American Women.

Serving as a welcomed release to the unpleasant, seamy side of life that the demanding nature of the job entails, a smile, a hearty laugh, and the ability to share some joy are integral to long-term survival in law enforcement and direct public service. Not only is the ability to laugh with others indispensible but equally as important is the ability to be able to laugh at oneself. Humor can ease daily stressors, brighten a spirit, and provide an emotional lift to those who deal with the bad and the ugly on a daily basis.

Intolerance Breeds Criminal Victimization

Secondary victims can be family members, friends, colleagues, and even communities. A secondary victim does not necessarily have to be acquainted with the direct victim but may be traumatized simply by being near the victim, in the vicinity of the incident or community at the time the event occurred.
