Training on a Shoestring

Veteran trainer Paul Whitesell said, "Every drill a bloodless battle, every battle a bloody drill." With the current budget crunch, oftentimes the first things cut or reduced are training programs. How can an agency still train effectively when ammunition budgets are slashed and in-service training hours are limited? It can be done, and here's how.

Ten Years or 10,000 Hours

From the chess master to the master at arms, it takes time and diligence to achieve advanced competence in any skill or ability. Research across domains shows that it is only by working at what you can't do that you turn into the expert you want to become. The skills and ability of the law enforcement officer require no less diligence.

Stress Kills

Stress and the cumulative effects of a stressful career can heap its toll on the strongest of us and yet very little training is given to law enforcement about stress. Oftentimes agencies succeed in only making things worse. Cardiovascular disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, ulcers, depression, the list of diseases and maladies that are caused by or worsened by chronic stress goes on and on.

Aces and Eights

J. B. Hickok didn't go looking for trouble, but helped make very violent towns safer during his time as a lawman. Violent confrontations between the good guys and the bad guys haven't changed much since the 1800s, and neither has the preparation for them.

Balance

A law enforcement career can be consuming with friends and family soon taking a second place. Putting your law enforcement career in balance with the rest of your life improves the quality of your life and relationships and is more meaningful.
