Paul R. Laska

After earning his B.S. in criminology from Florida State University, Paul Laska began his career in law enforcement with Florida's Belle Glade Police Department in 1974, where he was assigned to the Identification Section. In 1977 he moved to the Martin County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office as a detective with the Crime Scene Unit. In 25 years with the Sheriff's Office, he rose to the rank of sergeant, established the fingerprint identification files for the agency, was the first bomb technician, and eventually commanded the Forensic Science Unit, with responsibilities over crime scene investigation, fingerprint identification, bomb disposal, and for several years, records management. For his past seven years he was the environmental investigator, investigating a variety of environmental offenses, supporting a wide variety of regulatory agencies, and also continued as the bomb squad commander. Since retirement in 2002 he has continued in the field, working as a consultant, an instructor for a number of programs, and as a writer.

Firearms maintenance has always been sadly neglected. This new finish promises metal protection, lubrication, and ease of cleaning.

Is That Firearm Legal?

Assumptions do not make the grade when determining legality. But the months until the crime lab can process the item and give a definitive report will result in the incident being lost and never filed. How can you determine, at least for probable cause, if any of them are "illegal weapons".

IBIS Is Not a Bird

The value of IBIS has, nationally, been two-fold. First, it allows the lab to conduct cold searches of evidence, and identify the responsible firearm, an impossibility before cyber-ballistic investigations came along. Secondly, it allows the matching of cases. This provides investigators the knowledge that they are working cases related, if not by shooter, at least by firearm.

Handling Shooting Scenes as a First Responder

Shell casings, shot shell hulls, and projectiles are all capable of telling the firearms examiner a great deal -- the type of firearm, possibly the specific make and model of firearm, and with standards available, identifying the specific firearm. But it may also provide the officer on the street valuable information.
