Tim Dees

Tim Dees

From 1979 to 1994, Tim Dees was a law enforcement officer in Nevada for the Reno Police Department, Reno Municipal Court, and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Police Department. Following his police career, he was a full-time criminal justice instructor at colleges in Wisconsin, West Virginia, Georgia, and Oregon. He worked as a regional training coordinator for the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training, and was the first editor-in-chief at Officer.com before joining Elsevier Public Safety and LawOfficer.com in January 2008. His work has been published in nearly every major law enforcement magazine, and he is the author of a book published by Prentice-Hall. He holds a bachelor's degree in biological science from San José State University, a master of science degree in criminal justice from The University of Alabama, and the Certified Protection Professional credential from ASIS International.

Crime Mapping & Geographic Profiling

A geographic profile analysis can involve millions of calculations to produce a map illustrating the calculated probabilities of the offender living or frequenting a specific area or areas.

DNA Labs-on-a-Chip

A "lab on a chip" would be a form of presumptive test, not intended to be conclusive, but sufficient to establish probable cause for an arrest or search warrant, with or without other evidence. The technology would allow investigators to introduce a DNA-bearing specimen into a handheld analyzer, allow the analyzer to process the sample, and then compare the results to those in a database such as CODIS (Combined DNA Index System).

Digital Evidence Archiving

No matter what kind of law enforcement you're involved wit, most of your evidence is going to be documentary in nature. Reports, statements, court documents, diagrams, photographs, video and audio recordings, on and on, are going to describe what happened and who it happened to.

Biometrics

The characteristics by which you recognize people in this way are a form of biometrics--the recognition or identification of someone using persistent information unique to them, and embedded with them. That same system of biometrics allows non-human devices to identify or verify the identity of people, using characteristics that are difficult or impossible to alter.
