James Martin started a new business and named it by combining the first two letter of his first name and the first three of his last name - JAMAR. The full name of the new endevor was JAMAR Sales Company, which reflected the company's business model as a distributor of traffic data collection equipment made by other companies. Through the rest of the 1970s and into the 1980s, JAMAR established itself as one of the top sellers of traffic data collection equipment in North America.
