ORLANDO, Fla. -- A driver slammed into an Orlando police cruiser Monday morning as the officer was rushing to a vehicular armed robbery, police said.
Rescue crews had to cut both drivers from their vehicles after the collision at John Young Parkway and West Colonial Drive.
The officer's and the driver's injuries were not life-threatening, and they were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, Sgt. Barbara Jones of the Orlando Police Department said.
Records show the officer was driving southbound on John Young shortly after 5 a.m. when another car, traveling east on West Colonial, struck the cruiser on the side.
The officer had his lights and sirens turned on when he entered the intersection, Jones said.
The accident shut down the intersection for nearly two hours, while officers cleared the damaged vehicles from the road.
The officer was heading to an armed robbery to a vehicle in the 4200 block of Kirkland Boulevard, three miles south of the crash, records show.
