HINGHAM, Mass. -- State police are in mourning after an off-duty trooper, husband and father of two young children was killed in an early-morning car crash yesterday in Hingham.
Trooper Gregory K. Porter, 33, of Hingham was driving his 2000 Hyundai Elantra near the intersection of Central and Emerald streets yesterday about 12:30 a.m. when he lost control and struck a tree. Porter was the only person inside car when the accident happened.
"There is profound sadness among the troops today as we deal with the death of one of our own,'' said Colonel Mark F. Delaney, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. "During his brief career, (Porter) had distinguished himself with an award for saving lives. On behalf of the entire department, I offer our deepest condolences for Trooper Porter and his family.''
In 2006, Porter was honored by the state police for racing to a Bourne crash and pulling a woman out of her flaming car seconds before it exploded, state police spokesman David Procopio said.
Porter joined the state police in 2002 and worked out of the Norwell barracks. The crash that killed him is under investigation by the state police accident reconstruction team and Hingham police.
