LONGWOOD, FL – NDI Recognition Systems (NDI), a worldwide leader in automated license plate / number plate recognition (ALPR / ANPR) solutions for law enforcement, announces today that Lighthouse Point Police Department (LPPD) successfully apprehended two robbery suspects through the use of twenty-six (26) NDI Fixed ALPR systems and the VISCE Back Office System.
As part of its effort to preserve the peace, Lighthouse Point installed its network of NDI Fixed ALPR systems in 2010 with federal funding. Since that time, the system has seen incredible results in this small affluent community. “Like every other small community, we must always remember that we are part of something much larger. Crime doesn’t know borders, and as part of the Miami Dade/Broward metro area, Lighthouse Point PD must always be focused on preventing criminal elements from violating the peace and safety of those who live in our City,” states Chief of Police Ross Licata.
The system has captured over 20 million license plates since being installed, and has resulted in hundreds of alerts to law enforcement. Commander Mike Oh comments, “It alerts us to vehicles of interest that we may not have otherwise looked at. It focuses our efforts and makes us very efficient. The alerts provided by the system enable us to proactively set up surveillance on suspect vehicles or interdict and make arrests. But even more valuable is the intelligence gathered by the system. The system is invaluable.”
Just last week, the system was used to locate and apprehend two suspects in an armed burglary at the night deposit of a local bank. The victim had been approached by two suspects and severely beaten. The suspects fled the area in a dark colored SUV. An LPPD dispatcher searched NDI’s VISCE® Back Office System in real time and observed a vehicle matching the description pass by one NDI Fixed ALPR cameras. The dispatcher entered the vehicle’s license plate into VISCE and followed it through the City as it passed other NDI cameras, notifying patrol units with real-time information on the vehicle’s location. Commander Oh of LPPD adds, “The system really helped in this case. Knowing the location of the suspect vehicle, and with the help of an officer from Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) sharing the same radio channel, we were able to make a felony traffic stop without incident.”
