VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — A Vallejo police officer shot and killed a 29-year-old man who pointed a rifle at another officer early Sunday, police said.
Police went to the house after a neighbor reported two men arguing and that a fire had broken out at the home, KTVU-TV (http://bit.ly/RfCHgG ) said.
Vallejo police did not immediately return calls to The Associated Press, but police Lt. Lee Horton told the Vallejo Times Herald (http://bit.ly/SctreC ) that the man was shot by an officer after he stuck a rifle in another officer's stomach.
Later inspection of the rifle revealed it had a round in the chamber, Horton told the newspaper.
During the encounter, police called firefighters as the fire spread through the home.
The windows of cars parked in the driveway were smashed, apparently by at least one of the men during the argument that preceded the shooting.
A witness told KTVU that he saw one man taken away by the police and another man lying in the driveway.
The second man involved in the incident, identified only as a 28-year-old, was taken into custody. The station reported that the man who was shot was a resident of the home. His name has not been released.
It was the sixth fatal officer-involved shooting in Vallejo since May.
