CHICAGO - A 43-year old Chicago Police officer and academy instructor was shot and killed with his own weapon yesterday during a robbery outside a South Side police building.
Officer Thor Soderberg was shot while in a scuffle with a suspect outside the Englewood District Police Station. Officials say that the suspect somehow got ahold of Soderberg's weapon and used it to kill him.
Police say the suspect attacked Soderberg in the parking lot. After killing him, he committed a robbery. He was then wounded in a shootout with other officers.
The suspect is alleged to have some type of mental illness according to area residents. Police state that he has a criminal history including 21 arrests.
Soderberg was an 11-year veteran of the department. Married, he lived in the Kenwood neighborhood. He is the second officer to die this year. Officer Thomas Wortham was shot and killed while off-duty in a robbery on May of 2010.
