Police administrators, completely unfamiliar with aviation, often get their ideas and thoughts from books, movies, television and the internet. Many an aviation commander has swallowed hard and wondered what was coming when the chief said, "my wife and I were watching a movie over the weekend and..."

Police helicopters stage river rescue

One fisherman was pulled to the shore by the Fairfax Police Helicopter. The other fisherman was rapidly approaching the dam. The second fisherman was only a few feet from being swept over the dam when the United States Park Police Aviation Officers hoisted him to safety.

Today, it is almost standard to have an aircraft equipped with a searchlight, forward looking infra-red (FLIR), GPS, moving maps and in many cases a camera downlink system. In addition, night vision goggles, license plate recognition and computer aided dispatch may be part of the aircraft's onboard gear.

First US swine flu death; school closings possible

A Mexico City toddler who traveled to the Texas with family to visit relatives is the first confirmed death in the U.S. from swine flu. The boy, who was nearly 2 years old, arrived in the border city of Brownsville with "underlying health issues" on April 4 and developed flu symptoms four days later, the Texas Department of State Health Services said. He was taken to a Brownsville hospital April 13 and transferred to the following day to a hospital in Houston, where he died Monday night.

Special Report: Rescue Response to Flight 1549 in the Hudson River

There was an enormous response from the New Jersey side of the river, bringing multiple police, fire and EMS resources to the scene. Within sixty minutes of the water landing, there were literally thousands of rescuers on scene or staged to assist.
