Attorney defends trooper in Okla. ambulance stop

An Oklahoma state trooper who pulled over an ambulance with a patient inside and then scuffled with a paramedic had every right to make the stop since the vehicle did not have its emergency lights and sirens on, an attorney said Monday. Gary James, an attorney for trooper Daniel Martin, also said at a news conference that the trooper is not the "ogre" he has been made out to be.

Fiery Calif. freeway crash kills trucker

Witnesses said the heat from the blazing ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, was so intense it melted guardrails, and all that remained of the truck were its axles and small portions of the cab. The truck crashed around 6 p.m. Saturday, hitting the side rail of eastbound State Route 91 at the transition to Interstate 710, the Long Beach Fire Department said in a statement. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

First US swine flu death; school closings possible

A Mexico City toddler who traveled to the Texas with family to visit relatives is the first confirmed death in the U.S. from swine flu. The boy, who was nearly 2 years old, arrived in the border city of Brownsville with "underlying health issues" on April 4 and developed flu symptoms four days later, the Texas Department of State Health Services said. He was taken to a Brownsville hospital April 13 and transferred to the following day to a hospital in Houston, where he died Monday night.
