Santa Fe County to see more deputies on duty

KOB Albuquerque, NM

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office will shift the number of deputies during patrols-- it's all to beef up response with a leaner budget. Austin Reed is live in the newsroom-- to break down the numbers-- and what it means. Here is the news release-- and in it-- Sheriff Greg Solano says his new plan will keep the public much safer. The plan includes increasing the number of deputies by up to 110 percent. On average, there's 5-6 deputies patrolling during the day. The new plan will have an average of 10 deputies. The sheriff's office is able to do that because every single deputy will return to a 5 day per week schedule. Right now-- they are working four days-- with longer hours. The sheriff tell us it's making the streets less safe-- and it's time to change. Solano also tells me, he might lose a few of his deputies because of this re- organization. but says it still must be done. The sheriff's office has been slashing things because of a 300- thousand dollar budget shortfall. And Sheriff Solano says his office could face further cuts. the schedule changes will take effect July 16th.
